what i love about linux (from a non programmer pov)
my brother got me into CachyOS (an ArchLinux distribution) recently, and here's the list of things i love about it!
it's pretty: the user interface of most distributions (they're like "versions" of Linux) is so highly customizable you can make it look and feel however you want. i have straight up windows 7. i've seen people make it into a PipBoy from Fallout. it's all doable.
quite safe: it's not like there's no viruses for linux, but nowadays most viruses target Windows systems since they're so widespread. also my brother swears most linux viruses are for machines that run servers, and though i can't confirm, neither can i deny.
the level of control: depending on the linux distribution you have, there's a chance that there isn't a single driver, feature, or program in there that you haven't put in yourself at startup. linux will not auto update, it won't add AI or annoying services and mystery background processes. it won't track your data and send it to Big Linux or some shit like that. it just makes your computer run and that's it. FUCK ONEDRIVE AND COPILOT
it's fast and lightweight: i'm pretty sure my entire OS can run on less than 15gb, because that's what i gave it when i was testing it out. it's made my laptop insanely fast. hell, i ended up adding it to my old 2014 rescued PC and even SHE is running fast! my games are lightning and it boots up in seconds. the minimal background processes definitely play a part.
runs all the games: so most games on places like Steam are straight up linux native or linux compatible. and whatever isn't, you can use little programs like Proton and Wine to create compatibility. for example, Wine creates a little simulated Windows system that runs games for ya. heck i'm playing Oblivion rn (the original one, fuck UE5)
tinkering friendly: using the console command center to make changes, test out little things, and download programs directly from GitHub, is EXTREMELY easy. there's a little learning curve but once you remember the basic commands, you're running the place like a spaceship. it's just fun to play with, and if you want to try your hand at making a simple little computer program, all the tools are already here.
and finally, it's open source and free: this means the code that makes linux distributions run at their core is free to view, use and change by anyone. you and i and anyone don't have to pay anything, no licenses or God forbid, subscriptions. most programs if not all i have here are open source and free.
and you too can be free. escape the overlords and come join us on the linux archipielago 🏝️ where the waters are sweet and you don't have to pay to drink them.
